Gemini Observatory: Design and development of the Telescope Control System (TCS)

The client
The Gemini Observatory is an international $180m project, operating twin 8.1 metre reflecting telescopes, one sited in Hawaii and the other in Chile, which together provide complete sky coverage.

Background to our work
Having worked on this project for several years before closure of the Royal Greenwich Observatory and formation of Observatory Sciences, three of our personnel continued the work from Observatory Sciences, taking it through to delivery.

Our achievement
With overall responsibility for management of the project, we designed and developed the software which controls the telescopes. This included responsibility for the design and implementation of the interfaces to many of the TCS subsystems (described in separate project profile).
